Over the past year the Deltec team has been hard at work doing what we do best: reimagining the home.  Today, we announce our largest new product launch in the company’s history: the 360⁰ Signature Collection.  The new 360⁰ Signature Collection honors the legacy of our founder, Robert Kinser, and the innovative and exceptional panoramic design that has inspired Deltec homeowners for 56 years.  This new line of homes captures the true essence of what living in a round home is all about:

  • An extraordinary living experience
  • An unparalleled connection to the outdoors
  • Resilience to hurricanes and extreme weather conditions
  • Naturally more energy-efficient and sustainable

Better yet, because the homes in the 360⁰ Signature Collection are pre-designed and extremely efficient to manufacture and build, we are able to pass on significant price and time savings to our customers.  The 360⁰ Signature Collection offers:

  • 32 pre-designed floor plans carefully curated to reflect what our homeowners love most: spacious living at any size.
  • Cost savings of approximately 25% compared to our custom design path.
  • Our simplest process and fastest timeline.
  • Models that are all net-zero ready and can achieve wind resistance of up to 170 mph.
  • Single-story free-standing homes (no wings or connectors) with sizes from 517 to 2070 square feet.

While the 360⁰ Signature Collection does not allow for full customization, it has a large variety of bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and entry configurations to allow you to personalize your Deltec home.  Not to fret – if a custom-designed Deltec is what you dream of, this will always be available as part of the 360⁰ Design Studio

Every Deltec home, whether it is part of the 360⁰ Signature Collection or the 360⁰ Design Studio, is built with the same great materials and attention to detail and will be a panoramic retreat that you will love to come home to every day.

If the price of a Deltec home has been holding you back, we invite to look at Deltec in a whole new light.  The only question to ask yourself now is – am I ready to live outside the box?

-Steve Linton, President

Last week, I (Deltec’s Sustainability Manager) had the rare opportunity not only to attend, but to present a case study on Deltec Homes’ panelized building system at the ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) Buildings XV conference.  Titled “Zero Energy Ready Out of the Box,” I presented a paper co-authored Terri Gilbrilde of Pacific Northwest National Labs, who manages the DOE Building America Solutions Center and supports the DOE ZER (Zero Energy Ready Home) Program, and Kevin Broyzna, CEO of Insight Homes in Delaware, about the energy performance of panelized homes.

A key thesis of Terri’s work when analyzing the performance of Zero Energy Ready Homes, is that many of their participants who use pre-fabricated construction, such as SIPS, modular, or panelized processes, achieve equal and often better energy performance compared to fully site built homes.  This benefit is seen in lower average HERS scores and better air-tightness.

A sneak peak at some data presented at ASRHAE, courtesy PNNL and DOE ZERH.  Deltec’s system is a panelized system, which, like modular and SIP construction, two other types of construction that use components of the home that are pre-fabricated in a factory, has shown a lower average HERS score, air tightness score (ACH50), and higher estimated energy cost savings among participating projects of this construction type in the DOE ZERH program, than the average of ALL DOE Zero Energy Ready Homes across all construction types.

ASHRAE was founded in 1958 as a society for academics and engineers who work in the heating, cooling, and refrigeration industry, or related fields.  They have been holding their topical “Buildings” conference, where academic research is presented on topics related to the energy use, thermal comfort, resilience, and environmental sustainability of the built environment, every 3 years since 1977.

It was great to meet folks all across the engineering industry who are tackling the challenges of energy in the built environment.  While there, I attended talks about moisture monitoring in spray foamed roof decks in the southeast, building residence during extreme heat waves, advanced thermal storage, grid-interactive homes, thin triple pane windows, and more.  And got to have a tiny bit of fun in the Clearwater, FL Sun!

Today we honor the memory of the matriarch of the Deltec family, Cathryn Kinser, who passed away at the age of 83.  The wife of founder Robert Kinser, Cathryn helped to build the legacy of Deltec Homes into what it is today.

Cathryn nurtured a lifelong dedication to education and volunteerism.  Her many passions included her family, friends, church, and social impact work – with a special focus on parks and youth organizations.

In summarizing her career, you’ll encounter the same words over and over – Chairwoman. Founding Member. Board Member. Director. She harnessed her entrepreneurial, strategic, and organizational skills to drive change and actively work to make the world around her a better place.

Her career highlights include membership on the NC State Parks Board, where her exemplary service led to her membership with the National Parks board.  She facilitated the early development of the French Broad River park system through her work with French Broad Foundations and was a founding member of RiverLink. Additionally, as a member of the Blue Ridge Parkway association she served as Chairwoman for the North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway dedication in 1987.

Cathryn’s tireless volunteerism also encompassed extensive work in youth organizations where she drove immense impact on young lives. She was an Adult Advisor to the Asheville Buncombe County Youth Council, a Boy Scout Troop leader, and served on the board of directors of the YWCA.

A long-term member of Grace Baptist Church, Cathryn created and managed the church media center for five decades, ran the after school tutoring program and actively trained other churches on library and media center creation.

At her core, Cathryn was a passionate change-maker and community builder who worked tirelessly to share her knowledge and enrich the lives of those around her.  Cathryn’s warmth, vibrancy and passion for living life to its fullest will be missed by all of us at Deltec Homes.

So much of Cathryn’s ethos is embedded into Deltec Homes. So, while she might have left us, we know that her caring for people, her commitment to nature, and her desire to make the world better for this and future generations—will be carried forth by us in what we do every day.

Earlier this year, Deltec did a trip giveaway to Around the Sea, the world’s first rotating bed & breakfast located in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Did I mention it happens to be a Deltec? Our winners, Edwin and Rhena, couldn’t believe they had actually won. In fact, they thought it was a prank. Once reality settled in, they realized that the timing was perfect. There’s no better way to celebrate a 55th wedding anniversary than with a free trip to a place neither had ever been.

Edwin, who found out about the sweepstakes through our newsletter, documented the entire vacation and we’re lucky he did!

“We couldn’t believe that we had actually won anything, never mind this to trip to Canada to stay at a Deltec house that combines the American house with a rotating base from a company in Australia,” he said.

On the way into town, they were treated to what Edwin describes as an “auspicious omen”: After a mishap with the rental car, they ended up taking a taxi into town. When asked for a restaurant recommendation, the driver pointed them to Smitty’s. “When we sat down, the first thing we noticed was the menu cover. it said ‘Smitty’s 55 years – Proudly Serving Canadians Since 1960’.” As it turns out, Edwin and Rhena weren’t the only ones celebrating 55 years! They took it as a sign and ended up having a great time.

A brief background on Around the Sea: owners Steve and Stephanie learned about a rotating house in Australia and decided it would be a great feature of their B&B. With the ability to rotate, all of their guests get a variety of ocean views. They did a little research found the perfect collaboration to make their dream come true: e Rotating Structures and Deltec Homes.

The rotation is controlled from an app on Steve’s iPhone and Edwin describes it as “noticeable when you look out the window and see the scenery inching by. But the whole house is suspended on the rotating mechanism so well that you do not feel the rotating motion when you are in the unit. It takes 45 minutes for the house to complete one rotation. It’s not rotating constantly.”

Aside from the ocean views within the home, you can also enjoy the view from the porch overlooking a beach and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. All of this set in the charming fishing village of North Rustico.

For some of the vacation, there were gale force winds and heavy rain. Deltec is best known for its high wind and hurricane resistance, so Edwin can attest, when there’s a strong wind storm “they simply go around it.” The weather eventually cleared and they enjoyed the rest of their vacation under sunny skies.

A special thanks to Edwin & Rhena for sharing this adventure with Deltec Homes!

Since the beginning, Deltec Homes as been passionate about building homes for the future. Best known for their strength and ability to blend well with nature, our homes can truly bring the outdoors in. So when the YMCA of Western North Carolina approached us to build the cabins at their new summer camp, it was a no brainer. This was an opportunity to build something even more remarkable than our strong homes: strong kids.

Opening in the summer of 2015, Camp Watia will be a unique, affordable, residential camp with the sole purpose of serving the children in Western North Carolina.

In addition to traditional camp activities such as archery, swimming, boating, etc., the camp will deliver specialized programs such as STEM curriculum, sustainability education, cultural awareness and environmental studies. For Deltec, helping to promote this type of experiential education in an outdoor setting is right in line with our core value of environmental responsibility: leaving the planet better than we found it.

We’re excited to announce we’re building a new model home! The three bedroom, two bath home will be 1,500 square feet and net-zero energy.

“We wanted to show people a more typical Deltec home so we decided to go with one of our most popular sizes,” said Steve Linton, president of Deltec. “People are always impressed with our current model, but we often get requests to see a smaller one. We’re excited to finally fulfill those requests.”

True to our core values, the new model will demonstrate sustainable and energy efficient building principles. The passive solar design, with south-facing windows and stained concrete floors to act as a thermal mass, will help keep the home cool during the summer and warm during the winter. Using our Energy Wall and Energy Saver overhang, it will be super-insulated and air-tight, demonstrating the most cutting edge practices for energy efficient construction. In addition to these features, all of the electricity will come from renewable energy through an on-site solar array, enabling it to achieve Green Built North Carolina Net-Zero certification upon completion.

Located on the same lot as the current 4,500 square-foot model in Mars Hill, NC, the new model will allow people to see two variations. Construction will begin this fall. We’ll keep our customers posted on the progress with pictures and updates!

Deltec homeowner Agar B. built a two story Windsor with wing last year for his family in the surrounding countryside of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Since then, Agar has eagerly taken the next step on his Deltec journey: building a Deltec model home in the capital city to better showcase the product he plans on building.

With a skyline filled with modern highrises it might seem odd to imagine a Deltec home there…until you remember that Mongolia is home of the ger, or yurt, as you might know them. Agar selected a simple round two bedroom design for this project, the Monterey.

Yurts have been homes for Mongolians for over 3,000 years, so keeping the traditional round shape in a modern house is very appealing to homeowners in Mongolia. Another big selling point is Deltec’s extreme energy efficiency: Ulaanbaatar lays claim to being the coldest capital on earth, with winter temperatures dropping to -40° F, so an energy efficient home is crucial.

Agar is super excited about getting the model home built. “Finally, the customers will have a home to visit here in Ulaanbaatar.” His Monterey is slated for shipping in October and he plans to build it right in the capital.

Deltec Ships prefab home to Mongolia

Deltec Homes delivered their first home to the yurt’s country of origin, Mongolia. “Yurts are the traditional homes in Mongolia, so we’ve seen the benefits of living in a round structure firsthand,” said new Deltec homeowner Agar Batkhuyag of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. “I think keeping the traditional round shape in a modern house is a cool idea.”

Yurts have been a primary source of housing in Central Asia for over 3,000 years. Known for their tent-like material, round structure, durability and portability, they are still widely used throughout Mongolia.

Though many describe Deltec’s homes as “yurt-like”, there are several distinctions.

“Our homes are similar to the traditional yurt in that they’re round, but they’re actually very different,” said Joseph Schlenk, director of sales and marketing for Deltec. “Deltec homes are placed on a permanent foundation and built using standard construction practices, making them stronger. Also, since the walls can be insulated, they’re typically more energy efficient.”

When Batkhuyag contacted Deltec to build one of their flagship round homes, Deltec was eager to enter the Mongolian market.

“Not only are we excited to break the housing standard with what we believe to be a better alternative to yurts, but because Ulaanbaatar endures some of the harshest weather on the planet, it’s a whole new challenge for us,” said Schlenk.

According to professional geographer Matt Rosenbur, Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital city in the world, with an average annual temperature of 29.7 degrees. In the winter, temperatures can drop as low as 40 degrees below.

Because of the weather, an energy efficient home is crucial for Batkhuyag. The home features Deltec’s Energy Wall, an advanced wall system that maximizes insulation and ensures air tightness, among other high performance elements.

The weather wasn’t the only challenge the company faced. Colorado-based Deltec field consultant, Jeff Torr, traveled to Mongolia to assist with construction.

“The biggest challenge was communicating,” said Torr. “Luckily I had a translator who was by my side at all times. They were a great crew to work with, very hardworking.”

The home shipped on April 28 and arrived in Ulaanbaatar at the end of July. Once delivered, it took 6 days to assemble the round portion.

Next up in Mongolia? Another Deltec is arriving now, and yet another is scheduled to be shipped by year’s end, both in Ulaanbaatar.
